As soon as we sat down on the platform at the train station some dude came over and seemed to be bursting to say something. He eventually mustered the courage to say hi to Andy. He was absolutely beside himself with excitement. I guess he was from the villages where they don't ever see many foreigners. Really difficult to communicate with the obvious language barrier but we got the jist that he was very pleased to meet us.
It is so weird to me that it's ok to just stare at people, but you get people just staring at you all the time. It's really strange and weird with Andy and I because we are so Physically different. That seemed to interest people a lot because you wouldn't marry someone who lighter than you in Indian culture. They marry mostly within their own caste. So people are fascinated as to how Andy and I ended up together. I feel more aware I suppose on being darker skinned. I suppose I hardly ever think about it so knowing how to react is strange for me. I laugh and probably look perplexed mostly...
In the end there must have been about 20 guys stood around just listening to everything that we said. It was quite an intimidating and interesting experience in all. There was one man who worked as an engineer that acted as translator which was really helpful. They wanted Andy to propose for my hand in marriage, but we said that proposing on a train platform though memorable might not be the best place.
It made the wait for the train go much faster! Just wish I'd gotten a photo of all the men around Andy.
In Udaipur,we discovered the The Whistling Teal where you can just relax and buy the most amazing tasting coffee and ice cream drinks. I've had quite a few but these beat the rest by a long shot! We ended up spending quite a lot of time there which may or may not be a good thing as we didn't see as much of the city as we could have. The hotel was a shitter though. Really bad service! They basically ignored us most of time and went out of their way to be unhelpful. Rant over and on to Mumbai now.
(I had to take a photo of Andy squished into his bunk on the sleeper train to Mumbai)
